Public Safety Initiative / Campaign Award - Sponsored by National Grid
Rising to the challenge of improving the awareness of the dangers and symptoms of carbon monoxide, this organisation embarked on a national awareness programme. Together, with other key industry and charitable partners they delivered a comprehensive programme of public safety messages through the media and online. They acted to improve the number of alarms in homes across the UK and increased the number of appliances that are serviced by Gas Safe Registered service engineers.
The campaign was successful in increasing alarm sales by 400 per cent and also added over three thousand visitors to the dedicated website that the drive delivered. Importantly, the campaign was embraced by national media including newspapers and TV and featured on programmes including This Morning and The One Show.
Winner - Energy UK “Carbon Monoxide - Be Alarmed!” Campaign
Collecting the Award - Oliver Wright and Abigail Forbes

Individual Contribution to Safety Award - Sponsored by the Gas Forum
The judging panel considered many excellent nominations in this category. The winner has achieved so much in the area of gas safety with little funds and has tirelessly campaigned on carbon monoxide victims for several years, inspiring both the industry and public alike. Quite simply this individual has achieved so much with so little.
Winner - Stacey Rodgers

Process Safety Improvement Award - Sponsored by Morrison Utility Services
Process safety is at the very heart of an integrated approach to safety management and touches all parts of an organisation’s operations. The winner of the process safety improvement award has demonstrated how a risk-based approach to managing upstream gas escapes can deliver improved safety and benefits for both the general public and the network operator.
Working through a systematic process of pilot studies, field trials and national deployment (including the training of five hundred field staff), the new safety process is now recognised by the HSE as a “best practice” model in dealing with gas escapes and the programming of repairs.
Winner - National Grid OSGEM Steering Group
Collecting the Award - Ian Aldridge

Safety-Related Research Award - Sponsored by British Gas
The judges really wanted to recognise a safety research programme that has underpinned a step-change in safety on a sustainable basis.
This specific research has been extremely effective in terms of risk reduction and safety improvement, plus it has also been positively endorsed by the HSE. The original research completed between 1997 and 1999 underpins a risk assessment process that is still actively used today.
Key statistics resulting from this research include:
• 25 per cent reduction in metallic mains in the UK
• 53 per cent reduction in overall risk
• Over 100,000 kilometres of metallic mains have been replaced
• Leak repairs have reduced dramatically
Winner - GL Noble Denton
Collecting the Award - Rosemary McAll & Mark Brundle
Overall Safety Achievement Award - Sponsored by Energy Networks Association
This company has come a long way since it was created in 2005. They have significantly improved their overall safety performance as evidenced by a dramatic reduction in the number of incidents, accidents and injuries both to their own employees and members of the public.
In statistical terms, the measure of their success has been the reduction since their formation in 2005 of 75 per cent for lost time injuries and 86 per cent of injuries to the public. This has been achieved through strong leadership and the development of a clear identity and culture, that is now enshrined in the company’s “DNA”.
Active engagement at all levels of the business has kept safety at the forefront and has created the right environment to collectively move towards their target of zero accidents and injuries.
Winner - Scotia Gas Networks
Collecting the Award - John Morrea
